Top Wellness Trends for 2022
Before you make your health and wellness resolutions for 2022, check out some of the top wellness trends predicted for 2022. In my research for this blog, I was happy to see that the movement to a more conscious and holistic approach to wellness going a bit further than in the past. It incorporates a greater openness and acknowledgment of the benefits of sound therapy. It demonstrates how the pandemic has made us more aware of the importance of addressing our immune health. Lastly, it incorporates the undeniable impact of global climate change.
Sound therapy
Mind, Body, Green, lists sound healing as the number one wellness trend for 2022 and shares that “sound healing is taking the well-being world by storm”. For those of us who are either practitioners or have been on the receiving end of a sound experience, this is no surprise. Now it seems that others are learning what we have already known for years!
For years, I have been an advocate for science to demonstrate the benefits of sound therapy. So it is exciting to see that psychoacoustics, a relatively new area of science, is studying how the brain interprets sound. Many clients of my clients have shared that sounds of the gong or a chime bring up certain emotions or memories. It is this experience that allows us to delve deeper into our consciousness. Exploring these emotions and memories with compassion for self can provide opportunities to self-heal and bring our mind, body, and spirit organisms into greater balance.
Immune Health
Although short-term stress can boost your immune system’s response, long-term stress has been shown to weaken the immune system. As COVID-19 continues to be a health concern in 2022, increased awareness of how to boost our immune systems will continue to be a health concern. A recent Vox article shared that “…I n a recent study of 535 people published in The Lancet, those with confirmed cases of Covid-19 had much higher levels of cortisol than those who did not. “ Cortisol is produced by the body when under stress. So how will we improve our immune health in 2022? An answer is a mindful approach to health and wellness.
One of the easiest ways to bring mindfulness into your self-care routine is by focusing on the breath is key to mindfulness since it helps to quiet the mind. If you’ve followed me for any period of time, you know I am a strong believer in simple and effective tools that allow each of us to take better care of ourselves during our daily lives. One of the easiest pranayam techniques to support the immune system is dog’s breath. Grab your canine friend, if you have one, and check out my YouTube video for instructions on how to apply this breathing technique.
Climate Anxiety
Not all trends are positive. So it is particularly important to take note of what is happening to ourselves and those we care about. According to the American Psychology Association, “ An APA survey found that two-thirds of American adults said that they felt at least a little “eco-anxiety,” defined as anxiety or worry about climate change and its effects.” Trying to cope with the stress from the lockdown, many people gained a greater appreciation of the benefits of being in the great outdoors. This may have helped make the impacts of climate change more real and less theoretical.
I am a strong believer in acting locally. It is very empowering to have direct control over your actions. Couple that with being part of a movement, which brings strength in numbers and builds community. Interestingly, a related trend for 2022 is what Whole Foods Market coins as reducetarianism. It means reducing the amount of meat, dairy, and eggs that you eat.
According to Greenpeace, “the livestock sector accounts for 14 percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, roughly equivalent to emissions from the transportation sector. 75 percent of agricultural land is devoted to raising animals.” So you may not be ready to go vegan but consciously reducing how much of these products you eat will have an impact. We are so fortunate to live in times where we can find meat substitutes. If you haven’t tried Gardein’s many delicious products, put them on your shopping list. Violife and Field Roast are 2 of my personal favorite brands of vegan cheeses.
